After a car accident: towing and next steps
After a crash, things move fast. Here's an order that keeps you safe and protects your insurance claim.
1. Safety first
- Turn on your hazard lights. If nobody is hurt and the cars can move, get them out of the travel lanes.
- Call 911 if anyone is hurt, if the cars can't be moved or if there's a hazard such as fire or leaking fuel.
- Don't move someone who may be injured unless they're in immediate danger.
- On a highway, stay in the car with your seatbelt on if it isn't safe to get out.
2. While you wait for police
- Exchange names, phone numbers, insurance details and license plates.
- Take photos of all the cars, the plates, the road, the signs and any damage.
- Don't argue about fault. Stick to the facts.
- Ask the officer for the report number.
3. If the car can't be driven
Ask the officer whether you can use a tow company of your choice. If the car is blocking the road, police may call their own tow company to clear it. In that case, ask where the car is being taken and what it will cost. If you can choose, book a ZeroTow tow in the app, see the full price first and follow the truck on the map.
4. Decide where the car goes
- Call your insurance company first. Some insurers have preferred shops or storage rules, and it's better to know before the car moves.
- Choose a body shop, a dealer or your home. Don't leave the car at a tow yard longer than you have to, because storage fees can add up each day.
- Tell the driver about any damage, a missing wheel or a car that can't roll, so the right truck comes.
5. Before the hook
The ZeroTow driver photographs the car from every side before loading it, and you sign off. Take your own photos too, and take your valuables and papers out of the car if you can.
